Students can learn about life out on the sea at an open day in Warsash.

Demonstrations to take place at Warsash Maritime Academy open day

Warsash Maritime Academy, part of Southampton Solent University, is holding an event for prospective students to understand about careers in shipping.

There will be the chance to experience what it is like to be in a ship’s bridge, by taking a virtual walk through an engine room, at the academy’s new state-of-the-art engine simulator.

Information and talks will also be given about life on a ship’s deck or as engineering officer.

The open day is on Friday (January 18) from 10am to 4pm.

Potential recruits will also have the chace to see how fires are fought at sea, with visual displays by the Fire School, and to observe a flypast and winching demonstration by a coastguard helicopter. The demonstration will take place between 2.30pm and 3pm, but is subject to operational priorities.

There will also be 15 representatives from shipping related companies – including Anglo Eastern, Bibby Line, BP Shipping, Carnival, Maersk, Princess Cruises, Royal Fleet Auxiliary and Shell – on hand throughout the day to discuss career openings and opportunities.

Director of Warsash Maritime Academy, Andrew Hair said: “Shipping is a global industry that offers sponsored training leading to real jobs and exciting careers.  The continued demand for qualified ships’ officers offers excellent prospects for those wanting to enter an exciting industry that beats the nine to five routine.”

To register for the open day call 01489 556242 or email wma@solent.ac.uk.
